Basics of Dental Cosmetics: What You Should Know

Posted on January 11, 2022February 6, 2023 by Travis Lanford

Traditional dentistry is concerned with proper dental hygiene and the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases, while aesthetic dentistry is concerned with improving one’s appearance. Straightening crooked or chipped teeth, discoloration, and missing teeth are all treated with it. Thanks to technological advancements, dentists now have access to a wide selection of devices and techniques to help their patients achieve their desired results.

The Different Aesthetic Dentistry Procedures

Cosmetic dentistry is gaining popularity to enhance people’s looks and smiles. Below is a list of the many forms of cosmetic dentistry.

Dental Bonding

If your teeth are chipped, broken, cracked, discolored, or have too much space between them, bonding may help. Applying enamel-like composite resins to the tooth’s surface, shaping them, hardening them using ultraviolet or laser light, and polishing them is all part of the procedure. The final result blends in with the rest of the teeth and the surrounding dental structure, giving a smile a more natural appearance.

This is the most basic cosmetic dental procedure that may be accomplished in only one office visit. Bonding may also be used to cover up tiny cavities or protect a tooth’s exposed root. In today’s dentistry, bonding is a popular alternative to silver or amalgam fillings.

With Cosmetic dentistry, Surbiton Smile Centre can put a smile back on your face.

Bridges

Bridges are fixed partial dentures that repair gaps in the mouth or replace missing teeth. Prosthetic teeth are often made of gold, porcelain, metals, or a combination of these materials. Two visits are required to finish the procedure. Bridges may last three to fifteen years provided basic oral care is maintained.

Crowns

Crowns, also known as caps, are used to repair a tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance after being damaged. Crowns or caps are made of ceramic, metal, resin, or porcelain-fused-to-metal materials and are used to restore the look of shattered or discolored teeth. Dentists only recommend crowns if other operations have failed to provide acceptable results. Crowns have a 5- to 15-year lifetime.

Implants

Implants are the most expensive aesthetic dental treatments since they are a long-term solution for restoring missing teeth. They are tooth root prostheses made of titanium put into the bone sockets of missing teeth. There are alternatives to bridges and detachable dentures.

A dental implant is made up of three parts: Titanium metal attached to the jawbone, an abutment that fits over the protruding component of the implant, and a crown that gives the implanted tooth/teeth a natural appearance. They are surgically implanted into the jawbone by an oral or maxillofacial surgeon. If the periodontal disease causes bone loss, the surgeon will almost certainly need to transplant a bone to maintain the implant in place.

Did you know that the most common cause of tooth loss is gum disease? Book for periodontal services from Surbiton Smile if you notice any gum problem.

Veneers

Veneers are wafer-thin porcelain or resin pieces bonded to the teeth’ surface. This treatment is used to change the color or shape of teeth and repair and replace damaged, chipped, cracked, or gapped teeth. Veneers are a less expensive option to crowns that may address the same problems as bonding. This aesthetic dental surgery requires two consultations. Veneers may last up to 15-20 years if properly cared for.

Inlays/Onlays

They’re made mostly of porcelain or composite materials and repair tooth decay and other structural issues. Indirect fillings are another name for them. Unlike dental fillings, which are molded into place quickly during your office visit, inlays and onlays must be created in a dental laboratory before your dentist can fit and glue them into place.

An “inlay” is a filling material bonded in the core of a tooth, while a “onlay” is a filling material connected in one or more areas on the tooth or includes the biting surface. To maintain teeth healthy for a longer period of time, this cosmetic dentistry approach might be utilized instead of crowns.

If you have a healthy set of teeth, you may also try other cosmetic dentistry like teeth whitening services.
